Most of us want to feel like our lives have meaning – that we’re making a positive difference in the world. Science confirms this too with studies into happiness revealing what scientists call “helper’s high”. Helping others releases endorphins which, in turn, improves mood and boosts self-esteem. In short, helping others feels good.
Why is that?
It builds stronger social connections to friends and community. Gaining perspective helps you adapt better to stress and adversity by building resilience. And helping others can actually CREATE a sense of meaning in our lives, vs trying to FIND it.
Whether through my counselling of adolescents and teens or coaching parents, it helps to have more families realising the power in serving one another. In this way, we can all come to love and live out our common humanity. Common-unity.
